“A brick front on Nicholson Street”

The lounge stands on Nicholson Street, a short walk from the river flats and the Princes Highway. Look for the brick and timber front, the tall windows and the lamp above the step. The car park gate is on the left, the ramp is at the side door, and the front step is the only one in the street with a boot scraper that has been polished by use.

Reaching the house

“When is the telephone answered?”

When is the telephone answered?

From three o'clock in the afternoon on the days the lounge is open, and throughout the evening. Calls at other times go to a message, and I return them on the following day, as soon as I am in. If your call concerns a booking for that same evening, say so in the message, and I shall ring back before the doors open, since the book is always my first task of the afternoon.

How do I find the lounge from the highway?

Follow the signs into the centre of Orbost and turn into Nicholson Street. The lounge is on the right as you arrive from the west. After dark, the lamp above the front step and the one at the car park gate can both be seen from the corner. Drivers coming from the east should cross the river flats and take the first turning after the bridge, which brings them to the same corner in about two minutes. If you are unsure, telephone from the road, and Denise will talk you in.

Is public transport available?

Regional coach services stop in the town, but times change, so please confirm them with the operator before you travel. Taxis are few, and it is wise to arrange the journey home before the evening begins. Denise is happy to telephone a driver for you at any time during the evening, and she will try to find one before closing. Guests staying in town may find that the walk back is shorter than they think.

How soon is an email answered?

Email is read every morning, and a reply is sent in the order received. A booking request will usually be answered on the same day, though a busy weekend can delay the answer until the following morning. Please give a telephone number if you would like to be rung, and say which evening you have in mind, so that I can look at the book before I answer and give you a straight reply.

Whom should I tell about lost property?

Telephone and ask for Denise, describing the item as fully as you can. Anything left behind is kept at the front desk for a month, and she will check there and in the cloakroom before she calls you back. Spectacles, gloves and umbrellas are the most common losses, followed by scarves, and a surprising number of cardigans that nobody will own up to. Everything is kept for a month and then passed to a local charity.
