Adults only

Entry from eighteen

The lounge admits guests aged 18 and over, in the counter hall and the board room, at every hour and without exception.

The rule

“Eighteen and over, whoever you are with”

Every guest of the lounge must be 18 or over. The rule applies in the counter hall as much as in the board room, to the host's friends and the founder's family, at the first opening hour and at the last. I apply it to everyone in the same way, and I am grateful when guests help me by having their documents ready.

No exceptions are made. A guest who is with a parent, who has come only for soup or who will be eighteen next week cannot be admitted, and I shall not be able to relax the rule however politely I am asked. I apologise to anyone who is disappointed, and I would rather say so plainly at the door than let anyone hope.

Nothing is played online, so there is no age check to be performed on a screen. When this website asks you to confirm that you are 18 or over, the question is a courtesy and your answer is kept only in your own browser. The real check is made in person, at the door, with a card in your hand.

The reasons are simple. The board room is laid out like a small casino and plays the same games, and I consider those games to be an adult entertainment, even though no money is involved. The counter hall shares the building, the hours and the company, and one rule for the whole house is both fairer and easier to explain.

Questions

“What do I need to bring?”

What identification is accepted?

A current driver licence, a passport or a recognised proof-of-age card, provided it has a photograph and a date of birth. An image of a card on a telephone screen will not do, and neither will a card that has expired.

Who will be asked to show it?

Anyone who appears to be under 25 will be asked, and so may anyone else at my discretion. I ask in the same way and with the same courtesy of every guest, and I do not keep a record of the cards I see.

May I bring my sixteen-year-old son for dinner?

No. The house is for adults only, whatever the hour and whatever the meal. There is no children's menu and no early evening exception, and I am sorry to disappoint anyone planning a family supper.

What if I have left my identification at home?

Then I shall not be able to admit you if there is any doubt about your age, and I would rather you telephoned before leaving home than were disappointed at the door.

Where can I complain if I am refused?

To me, at the door or afterwards by telephone or email. I shall explain the decision, review it with you and, if I have made a mistake, put it right. The decision will stand if proof of age cannot be shown.

May we ask your age?

The Lilly Pilly Lounge admits guests aged 18 and over only. Please confirm that you are of age before you look around the website.

Your answer stays in this browser. Identification, if needed, is checked in person at the front door.
